Saddharma-Yoga is a liberating physical and psychospiritual discipline (YOGA) anchored in the authentic (SAD, pronounced sud) teaching (DHARMA) of the Buddha.
It is concerned with the spiritual liberation not merely of oneself but of all beings. It proceeds by means of the cultivation of a deep inner letting-go, compassionate action motivated by the impulse to alleviate and ultimately remove the suffering of all sentient beings, and the recognition that all phenomena, including oneself, are completely interdependent and therefore “empty” of an independent essence.
The spiritual practice of Sad-Dharma-Yoga involves stress release through yogic postures and other similar techniques, as well as deep conscious relaxation (mainly in the form of Yoga-Nidra or “Yoga Sleep”). By de-stressing, the body-mind becomes more capable of undergoing the profound inner psychospiritual transformation called for on the path of wisdom and compassion.
On the physical level, Saddharma-Yoga favors a simple, flexible, and gentle approach. Its ethical principles are introduced gradually in a supportive, nondogmatic, and nonthreatening way.
Saddharma-Yoga was created by Brenda Feuerstein in 2008 to bridge the gap between physical yogic discipline, such as Hatha-Yoga, and the profound tradition of mind training developed in Buddhism. Brenda was for many years a personal trainer serving thousands of students of all ages and also has a strong background in teaching Hatha-Yoga from a more spiritual perspective. She is a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism and for her work has the blessings of her lama (the Ninth Neten Rinpoche). She is married to Dr. Georg Feuerstein and has coauthored with him two books—Green Yoga and Green Dharma.
