It was a bright, balmy day in March,
a fortnight away from official spring,
when honking filled the blue sky above.
Two columns of early-bird geese
were traveling from east to west
in steadfast, if ever shifting, procession.
Suddenly they changed course
and flew straight overhead.
before, with equal suddenness,
resuming their westerly flight.
In that surprising moment, in the south-east,
toward a low sun, two iron birds
were painting a perfect contrail cross,
straight up and down, over the snow-speckled hills.
We took this as a hopeful omen for things to come.
Such is a joyous mind.
