When our passions fade
like clouds drifting toward the horizon
and the sky of our mind is luminous and clear,
then we can hope to hear
the nightly whispers of a billion souls
who yearn but do not find
the riches of respite
beyond the turbulence of ordinary life.
When our thoughts thin out
like morning’s vapor
lifted into light,
then we shall be free
to listen to the joy of flowers,
birds, and trees,
who chant life’s verb undisturbed
by careless intervention
or pitiless intent.
