He darted out of a stubby shrub
that could not possibly have hidden him from sight
had it not been for the perfect camouflage
of his white pelt.
Our dog had stumbled on him
and then chased the fugitive half-heartedly
for fifty yards in an easy zigzag
before, surprisingly obeying our shouts,
he turned back, proud of himself and satisfied.
When the lazy chase had ended,
the fugitive hobbled away to a quieter plot
beyond the wire fence.
It was a brilliant day with blue skies
and sunlight sparkling on frozen snow
—the kind of day when an elderly dog
should meet an elderly hare.
