by Georg Feuerstein (with Brenda Feuerstein)
This translation represents a thoroughly revised version of Dr. Feuerstein's long out-of-print book published in an Indian edition in 1980, which was withdrawn from circulation shortly after it had been published. The principal attraction of this version is that both the Sanskrit text in the devanagari script and an academic transliteration are found on the facing pages of the actual rendering along with copious notes, so that readers wanting to study this text have all the tools in front of them simultaneously.
The translation is rigorously literal, because Georg Feuerstein felt that this is the only way to do justice to the Gita's great linguistic and philosophical complexities. Despite his focus on accuracy, his rendering still reads well.
Detailed footnotes and the introductory matter provide the necessary linguistic and cultural background, which is often omitted in English renderings. The book addresses even the more challenging questions that an alert reader might have and that many translators ignore or skirt.
This is an important contribution to the Gîtâ literature.
