The Bhagavad-Gîtâ (120-Hour Course)

SUBJECT: The Bhagavad-Gita is the most important Hindu Yoga scripture. It is intended for householders, which contrasts it with the Yoga-Sutra.

PURPOSE: This 120-hour distance-learning course has the purpose of making the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita accessible. This text exists in numerous translations, but few of them are based on the critical edition and a detailed study. The present effort is building on Dr. Georg Feuerstein’s 500-page book The Bhagavad-Gita: A New Translation (Shambhala Publications), which also contains the Sanskrit text and a translation with detailed notes.

DESIGN: The course comprises 23 lessons commenting on the 18 chapters of the Gita and clarifying all the essential concepts. Each lesson has homework assignment that must be submitted to the tutor. The commentary is from a non-sectarian perspective that also takes the Gita`s practical context into account.

CURRICULUM: The lessons of the course follow the layout of Dr. Feuerstein’s The Bhagavad-Gita: A New Translation (Shambhala Publications).

COURSE MATERIALS: The treatment revolves around Dr. Feuerstein’s Gita book, which must be purchased separately. The Study Guide of 216 pages is available online as a downloadable file or as a hardcopy in a binder.

TIME FRAME: The course extends over 1 year but can be renewed, and the extension of 3 months is $50.00.

HOMEWORK: Students wishing a certificate are required to submit 23 lessons and a final essay of at least 2,500 words but no more than 4,500 words. There is also a practical alternative for those unable to write the essay. Those not wishing a certificate do not have to submit anything at all.

FOREIGN STUDENTS: Students are expected to have proficiency in English. We ask overseas students to please carefully appraise their level of linguistic competence before signing up, as no refunds will be possible.

CERTIFICATE: Students who have successfully completed the course (which requires homework submission) are granted a certificate of completion.

COST: The basic fee for the distance-learning course is $250.00 Canadian for a digital download version (PDF), and $350.00 plus shipping and handling for the binder version. The full amount is due when signing up for the course. Please note that shipping from Canada is expensive, even though we do not charge a handling fee.

If you would like to set up a study group, please contact us about the reduced rate for 5 or more people participating at the same time.

PAYMENT METHOD: The course must be paid up front by either credit card or by Personal Check (please contact us for details).

TAX AND CUSTOMS DUTY: Canadian residents are subject to GST/HST and/or PST on our educational materials. For foreign shipments, we will appropriately mark the customs declaration as “educational materials” and insure the package for the material value of the contents. Non-Canadian students may nevertheless have to pay a customs fee at their end.

REFUND POLICY: No refunds will be made.
