Towers of Deception by Zwicker

Barrie Zwicker. Towers of Deception: The Media Cover-Up of 9/11. Gabriola Island, B.C.: New Society Publishers, 2006. Paperback, xiv + 400 pp.

Five years after the tragic events of 9/11, the American public has all but returned to its sheeplike slumber. Except for a few writers, who are frequently dismissed as mere “Anti-American” conspiracy theorists, no one seems interested in pressing for answers to the many unanswered questions and strange contradictions surrounding 9/11. From the outset, the mass media have swallowed the official version (or versions) of the U.S. government, and even the alternative media have largely grown silent.

Michael C. Ruppert’s well-documented, massive book Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil (2004; also published by New Society Publishers) should have made it into the hands of millions rather than only tens of thousands of readers. That it didn’t so far bespeaks partly of the incredible lethargy of the public and partly of the studied silence of the media. Fortunately, there are still a few brave souls like Zwicker and his publishers, as well as the 9/11 Truth activists featured in Towers of Deception who continue to ring the alarm bell.

This book examines why even otherwise pugnacious media have opted to accept the government’s version(s), even though U.S. officials have contradicted each other and sometimes themselves and have repeatedly been caught lying about vital aspects of the 9/11 events and related matters. As the subtitle of his book suggests, Zwicker believes there has been a serious media cover-up, and he makes an excellent case for his conclusion.

Zwicker offers a blow-by-blow, or lie-by-lie, account of post-9/11 developments peppered with his informed and equally devastating commentaries. In case you were wondering: Yes, the author invokes the “invisible government” within the U.S. government, but in doing so, here merely follows the lead of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. One of the book’s pleasurable aspects is its introducing the leaders of the 9/11 Truth movement, notably theologian David Ray Griffin (author of The New Pearl Harbor).

No open-minded individual can walk away from reading this chronicle of political subterfuge and not call for at least a new, unbiased investigation, if not an actual indictment of the Bush regime. Bravo Barrie Zwicker! Bravo New Society Publishers!
