The Language of Yoga by Bachman

Nicolai Bachman. The Language of Yoga: Complete A to Y Guide to Asana Names, Sanskrit Terms, and Chants. Includes 2 CDS. Spiralbound paperback, 139 pp.

This beautifully produced book has the declared purpose of preserving and encouraging “the correct sound and spelling of Sanskrit chants and terms related to the science of yoga.” The author, who teaches Sanskrit, Ayurveda, and Yoga philosophy, has succeeded in accomplishing his goal and has produced a valuable reference guide for those wishing to take their practice and study of Yoga seriously.

Both author and publisher are to be commended for having spared no effort to make this book as precise and readable as possible, and have even provided the Sanskrit terms in the deva-nagari script. The book includes the Sanskrit names of each component of well-known posture series illustrated with small figures for the reader’s convenience. But this is not another asana workbook, thank heaven!
